When it comes to your grooming game, popping that zit, picking at scabs, over-washing (yes, that’s a thing) are actually big no-nos. So if you’ve been wondering why your skin isn’t impressing lately, these bad habits may be the culprit.

Bad Habit #1 Using the wrong cleanser

The wrong cleanser for your skin type can lead to tightness, itchiness, irritation, inflammation, and breakouts. Just think: the last thing oily skin types need is a creamy facial wash. Instead, look for a wash or scrub with mineral clay to control excess sebum and fight pimple-causing bacteria.

Bad Habit #2 Over-washing your skin

Most guys don’t realize over-cleansing (or over-exfoliating) is just as bad as not washing your face at all. Here’s why: Washing too often strips your skin of its natural protective barrier, causing it to dry up. This can lead to dryness, irritation, and breakouts. Limit cleansing to your a.m. and p.m. routine and splash face with cold water for a refreshing pick-me-up instead.

Bad Habit #3 Scrubbing your face too hard



Who doesn’t love that squeaky-clean fresh feeling? But scrubbing your face too hard with your hands or a washcloth may aggravate existing acne, leave your skin red and raw, and result in future wrinkles. Instead, invest in a facial scrub that does all the hard work for you to remove trapped dirt from pores.

Bad Habit #4 Washing with too-warm water

Long, hot steamy showers sound so relaxing, right? But hot water can dry you out. Use lukewarm water instead, which helps lift dirt and oil from your skin, or rinse off using cool water, which closes your pores. Lightly pat skin dry (don’t wipe and rub) to minimize wrinkles and sagging facial contours.

Bad Habit #5 Popping, picking, and peeling

Everyone knows you shouldn’t pop your pimple, pick that scab, or peel flaking skin - especially if you want clear and smooth skin that’s free of further infection, inflammation, and scarring. Protect your skin from yourself and avoid touching any facial blemish. If you’re prone to blackheads and breakouts, invest in a facial wash with anti-bacterial ingredients to help banish those bumps.

Bad Habit #6 Skipping SPF

Sun damage caused by UVA and UVB rays increase with age, making you more susceptible to its effects as you get older (i. e. dry skin, rough patches, dark spots, loose and sagging skin, wrinkles, and cancer). So it’s important to be diligent about wearing sun protection even if you’re just heading to your car or going on a quick coffee run. Sunscreen is important so you look more gwapo as you get older.
