What's The Big Deal About Micellar Water, Anyway?

There's no denying that it’s a hot beauty fad, but it may not be as essential as you think.

If you’ve come across the latest skincare buzz words “micellar water” and was left a tad bit confused or even intrigued, you’re not alone. While many variants are cropping up left and right, the question still remains: what is it, exactly? And more importantly, do you really need it? Before you shell out your hard-earned cash, read up on these skin facts first.

Fact 1: Micellar Water isn’t exactly new. While it seems like it’s the latest in research and development, the technology has been around since 1913 and was initially developed to combat France’s harsh water supply. The micelles, or tiny oil molecules mixed with soft water, are attracted to dirt and it works by drawing out the day’s grime and makeup. It doesn’t have to be rinsed off, so if you like the clean and fresh feeling of washing your face or have acne-prone skin, this may not be the best option for you.

Fact 2: It doesn’t always get all the gunk out. Though this technology has been incorporated into makeup removers, it isn’t always effective—especially when it comes to waterproof or long-lasting makeup. A cold cream still remains to be the favorite—of generations of women no less—for makeup removal with the least amount tugging (even stubborn mascara!). Another skin bonus? Cold cream also deeply moisturizes your skin in the process.

While Micellar Water can gently remove dirt, oil, and light makeup from your face, do your research first and gauge whether it’s really best for your skin type. There’s no need to feel pressured into experimenting with every beauty trend that pops up—especially if you’ve already found a tried-and-tested formula that works for your complexion. At the end of the day, the age old adage “cleanse, tone, and moisturize” is still the champ when it comes to keeping your skin clear and youthful.
